THIS SERIES OF ARTICLES IS INSPIRED BY my previous series, “The Star Children”. In those writings, I vividly describe some powerful characteristics of a new breed of young people, a powerful force that is coming onto the planet. It was in the summer of 1990, during the Panamanian conflict. I was an M-60 Machine Gunner in the Army at the time, assigned to the 7th Infantry Division. My weary eyes gazed out into the midnight mists of a dark jungle. Breaking the silence was an irritating buzz in my ear; I swiped at the mosquito and missed it. The buzz reminded me of the unbearable itching on my arms, so I bathed them in another scratch-fest. The itching quickly turned into stinging, as the blood oozing from the innumerable insect bites on my arms mingled with my sweat. The stinging soon grew intolerable, so I tried to think of something to do that would take my mind off of it. Reaching over to my pack, I pulled out an MRE (Meal-Ready-to-Eat).  The term “cloning” is used by scientists to describe many different processes that involve making copies of biological material, such as a gene, a cell, a plant or an animal. The cloning of genes, for example, has led to new treatments developed by the biotechnology industry for diseases such as diabetes and hemophilia. In the context of this report, a human embryo produced via cloning involves the process called somatic cell1 nuclear transfer (SCNT). In SCNT, the nucleus of an egg is removed and replaced by the nucleus from a mature body cell, such as a skin cell. In cloning, the embryo is created without sexual reproduction: there is no joining of egg and sperm.
