WRITING TIPS: Choosing a narrative voice for your story
Okay, so you have an idea for a Lancer story. Great! You even know how it will start and how it will end. Even better! BUT ... and this is often the big but (pardon the pun) ... whose voice are you going to choose to tell your story? We call this choosing a Point of View, or POV for short. Straightaway, you're faced with quite a few options! The aim of this post is to help us understand each of the different POVs, and secondly, which one will work best for your story. FIRST PERSON: Your character will refer directly to themselves, using the pronouns I and me. Thus, if it's told from Scott's perspective, it will read something like this: Had I been a complete fool for choosing Murdoch's offer? The more the stagecoach rattled and swayed, the less sure I was of my own ability to make a sensible decision. I'd managed to sit on the seat next to only one other person, so at least I wasn't cramped, but I was tempted to reach...
