The vote the President asked me to cast wasn’t just for Betsy – it was also for America’s future. Our nation’s success depends on the education of our students. In Betsy DeVos, we have one of America’s foremost advocates for educational opportunity and excellence. For nearly three decades she has devoted her time, her talent, and her treasure to ensure that every child in America has the best shot at a better life. Countless students have benefitted from her efforts to promote an educational marketplace defined by innovation, opportun...

Judy Hopps is East Asian

Let’s break down the stereotypes in this movie: Judy is the first bunny police officer.  I know there’s a lot to be said about black/white race relations and police brutality, but no one ever remembers that Asians are  the most underrepresented ethnicity in American police departments . Judy is not perceived to be dangerous.  This is significant because most of the other POC/predators in this movie ARE seen as dangerous. Nick, Mayor Lionheart, the mafia polar bears… I could go on and on. And in real life, it’s generally black, latinx, and arab POC that are perceived as dangerous. East Asian POC face discrimination, for sure, but they’re not typically seen as dangerous. Instead, Judy is generally seen as weak and delicate , which mirrors the perception of East Asians, especially East Asian women, in mainstream media. She’s also physically small/petite. “Only bunnies can call each other cute.”  I know a lot of people likened this to the n word, but within the ...

One Role of Mars Orbiter: Check Possible Landing Sites

Image
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been observing Mars since 2006, enabling it to document many types of changes, such as the way winds alter the appearance of this recent impact site. The orbiter's HiRISE camera took the four images used in this animated sequence in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Univ. of Arizona Full image and caption At an international workshop this week about where NASA's next Mars rover should land, most of the information comes from a prolific spacecraft that's been orbiting Mars since 2006. Observations by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the basis for evaluating  eight candidate landing sites  for the Mars 2020 rover mission. The landing site workshop this week in Monrovia, California, will narrow the Mars 2020 candidate list to four or fewer sites. MRO observations have been used to identify, characterize and certify past landing sites and are also in use to assess possible ...

NASA's Curiosity Rover Sharpens Paradox of Ancient Mars

Image
Bedrock at this site added to a puzzle about ancient Mars by indicating that a lake was present, but that little carbon dioxide was in the air to help keep a lake unfrozen. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS Full image and caption Mars scientists are wrestling with a problem. Ample evidence says ancient Mars was sometimes wet, with water flowing and pooling on the planet’s surface. Yet, the ancient sun was about one-third less warm and climate modelers struggle to produce scenarios that get the surface of Mars warm enough for keeping water unfrozen.  A leading theory is to have a thicker carbon-dioxide atmosphere forming a greenhouse-gas blanket, helping to warm the surface of ancient Mars. However, according to a new analysis of data from NASA's Mars rover Curiosity, Mars had far too little carbon dioxide about 3.5 billion years ago to provide enough greenhouse-effect warming to thaw water ice. The same Martian bedrock in which Curiosity found sediments fro...

The Raven Haired Lady Posted: 08 Feb 2017 08:23 AM PST “Have a bit of a tale for you, if you want to look into it. I for one do not know if this is a common phenomena or not, as I've never heard of it happening to anyone else. But it may be a lead for you to find similar cases. I will say, the phenomena is apparently gender specific, and also seems to be multi-generational in scope. The phenomena in question is dream state visitations by what my husband and all the males within his side of the family have come to refer to as "the Raven Haired Lady." This "entity," if I dare call it that, first came to my attention about a year after my husband and I wed in 2008. It was a balmy July evening, and we were having a family get together of sorts. The men had all gathered around a fire pit they had set alight in the back yard, and were just generally chatting about family matters. We ladies and wives were attending the children and gossiping amongst oursel...
