JANIS JOPLIN IS FINALLY IMMORTAL Songwriter and friend Johanna Hall on the debt we owe the rock goddess By  Johanna Hall  on August 13, 2014 Corbis Janis Joplin in 1970, the year she died. Janis Joplin is getting a Forever stamp.  She'd have liked that, with her fierce ambition, her fear of being forgotten, and the creative striving that drove her brief career. She set an example for all the powerful, complicated performers who came after her, who were unafraid to unleash their talent into the world and didn't fit into a ready-made mold. Janis certainly didn't fit the image of the pretty girl singer. Instead she roared on stage at Woodstock 45 years ago this month, expressing deep hunger and psychic pain in an extravagant performance that catapulted her into the national consciousness. The last time I saw Janis was August 8, 1970, at the Capitol Theatre in  Port Chester , New York. Two months later she would be dead. I was standing in the wings wat

Imagination Is More Important Than

… a message from Cat RunningElk     When I was a little girl walking home from school, I used to play a game with the Universe.  No one else was around, just me and the Powers that Be, so I would use my imagination to decide what kind of car was going to come around the corner next. I was amazed at my ability to create a red four door, a brown station wagon or a green truck.  Somehow I had this magical ability to create whatever kind of car came into my mind, just before it would appear around the bend. Then I would contemplate and ask The Universe if I created it, or did I have the ability to k now what kind of car was going to come around the corner next.  Either option seemed too impossible to my mind, yet I continued to play the game, amazed how I knew what car was coming, or I seemed to have the ability to manifest whatever I thought about. I am still playing that same game with The Universe. I still wonder how much I know in advance, and how much am I creating. I have worke

Dive In – The Water’s Fine

a message from Cat RunningElk Saturday, 19 July, 2014 (posted 14 August, 2014)   I was standing in waist deep, crystal clear, warm water and I was afraid to dive in. I wanted to experience swimming in the warm, beautiful Gulf waters.  But I was afraid. Longing to stop the thoughts that were limiting my life experiences, I had waded out more than 100 yards from the safety of my beach towel. Now I stood paralyzed.  Waist deep I looked back… All the fear-based thoughts that had been passed down for generations needed to be put to rest. Growing up with many days on sunny shores did not mean I grew up swimming in these waters.  Instead I grew up being told all the reasons why I should never swim here. Story after story of bad things were passed down to me. And so I have spent many, many days sitting on the beach, admiring the water, but too afraid to swim. And now I longed to swim, and splash and play like I never did as a girl. My guides had lured me into the water to cool off, so I h

In a full week, I read all the "unexplained" cases in the original files and made extensive notes, including the names and other identifying information on all witnesses where given.  The cooperation of the staff of the Archives was ex
