In light of the wave of flying humanoid sightings in the Chicago metro area, there has been talk that this is a 'harbinger of disaster' or 'portent of doom.' The following information details the supposed sightings around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant before and after the nuclear meltdown:

Beginning in early April 1986 the people in and around the little known Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant began to experience a series of strange events revolving around sightings of a mysterious creature described as a large, dark, and headless man with gigantic wings and piercing red eyes. People affected by this phenomena experienced horrific nightmares, threatening phone calls and first hand encounters with the winged beast which became known as the Blackbird of Chernobyl.

Reports of these strange happening continued to increase until the morning of April 26, 1986, when at 1:23 am, reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant experienced a catastrophic steam explosion that resulted in a fire which caused a series of additional explosions followed by a nuclear meltdown. The power plant, located near Pripyat, Ukraine, Soviet Union, spewed a plume of radioactive fallout which drifted over parts of the Western Soviet Union, Eastern and Western Europe, Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland and eastern North America. Large areas of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia were badly contaminated, resulting in the evacuation and resettlement of over 336,000 people. The Chernobyl Disaster, as the incident was dubbed, is considered the worst accident ever in the history of nuclear power.

Following the meltdown, and subsequent explosions and fires, Soviet helicopters were dispatched to the scene, equipped with special fire fighting gear, these helicopters circled the plant dropping clay, sand, lead and other extinguishing chemicals on to the burning facility. Most of the fire was put out by 5 am with the fire burning with in reactor 4 continuing to blaze for several hours after. The firefighters who responded were unaware of the nature of the fire, assuming that it was simply an electrical fire, and received masses overdoses of radiation leading to many of their deaths, including Lieutenant Vladimir Pravik, who died on May 9, 1986.

The workers who survived the initial blast and fire, but would later die of radiation poisoning, claimed to have witnessed what has been described as a large black, bird like creature, with a 20 foot wingspan, gliding through the swirling plumes of irradiated smoke pouring from the reactor. No further sightings of the Black Bird of Chernobyl were reported after the Chernobyl Disaster, leaving researchers to speculate just what haunted the workers of the plant during the days leading up to the disaster.

The most commonly accepted theory suggests that the Black Bird of Chernobyl may have been the same creature spotted in Point Pleasant, West Virginia leading up to the collapse of the Silver Bridge on December 15, 1968. Investigators have suggested that the appearance of this creature is an omen of disasters to come in the area in which it shows itself. The physical description of both the Black Bird of Chernobyl and the Mothman, the creature sighted in West Virginia, are very similar, and the reports of nightmares and threatening phone calls leading up to these disasters are shared in both cases.

A second, less accepted theory, suggests that the Black Bird of Chernobyl was nothing more than the misidentification of the black stork, an endangered species endemic to southern Eurasia. The black stork stands nearly 3 feet tall and has a wing span of nearly 6 feet. This theory however fails to take into account the menacing phone calls and the the disturbing nightmares. Also the physical description given by the majority of eyewitnesses who actually saw the Black Bird of Chernobyl does not in anyway match the physical appearance of the Black Stork.

Both the Black Bird of Chernobyl and the Mothman have not been sighted since there respective disasters, leaving us with many unanswered questions. All we can do is wait for the beast to show itself again and give us a chance to figure out just what it may be, unfortunately it would appear that for this creature to show up again we will have to anticipate some form of disaster in the area it has selected to appear.

THE BLACK BIRD OF CHERNOBYL: Further Descriptions

Beginning in April of 1986, a rumor tore through the ranks of what was then a little know nuclear power plant located in the southern tier of the Ukraine...Chernobyl. In the days preceding the tragic meltdown, four Chernobyl employees had reported seeing what they claimed was a large, dark, headless man with gigantic wings and fire-red eyes.

Researchers now believe that the accounts surrounding this creature are similar to what investigators now recognize to be an archetypal Mothman event. Much like the Point Pleasant Mothman witnesses, these Chernobyl employees began to share unsettling and strangely similar experiences.

Some had been having horrifying nightmares, while others received threatening phone calls. According to accounts, some of these employees even mentioned their bizarre experiences to their superiors at the facility, but without evidence or any clear cut indication of what the problem may be, there was very little these officials could do...even had they been willing to take action.

On April 26, 1986, during a routine test of Reactor 4, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was rocked by a massive explosion. Thirty people died that morning, followed by ten additional ten deaths due to radiation exposure. Over the next nine days the graphite of the reactor continued to burn, resulting in tremendous environmental damage and an untold number of radiation casualties over the next 17-years.

As the Soviet helicopters circled the smoldering plant, dropping over 500 pounds of clay, sand, lead, and other extinguishing chemicals on top of the flames, some of the surviving workers...who, at the sacrifice of their own lives, heroically struggled to prevent any further destruction - claimed to have witnessed what has been described as a "20-foot bird" gliding through the undulating tentacles of irradiated smoke, which continued to spew from the reactor.

Here's an interesting passage from the 'Still on the Track' website:

Mothman was said to have been seen when disaster threatened. It is not the only winged creature to be seen before a disaster. The Black Bird of Chernobyl was said to herald the explosion at a nuclear plant in the Ukraine. On April 26, 1986, a massive explosion rocked the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Thirty people died immediately, followed by other deaths from radiation poisoning. For nine days the reactor continued to burn, resulting in tremendous environmental damage. The local population has suffered with the consequences ever since. The Chernobyl Disaster, as it was called, is considered the worst accident in the history of nuclear power.

In the days before the tragic occurrence several Chernobyl employees had reported seeing a large, dark/ black shape like a headless man with gigantic wings and red, fire-like, eyes. As with the appearances of Mothman, people who had seen the phenomena had been having nightmares and some received strange phone calls. Some of the employees reported the strange things to their supervisors at the plant. Whether any sort of action was taken is unknown. After the explosion helicopters were brought in to drop extinguishing agents on the flames. Some of the pilots and the surviving workers said they saw a giant black bird flying away from the smoking reactor. Described by many as “a large black, bird-like creature, with a 20-foot wingspan, gliding through the swirling plumes of smoke." The bird has not been seen again.

The theory out forward was that the bird was a rare black stork. However, the stork has a clear visible head and its wingspan is only about 6 feet (1.9 metres), and it stands about 3 feet (1 metre) tall. It also would not explain the strange dreams and phone calls. So was this winged creature a portent of the disaster? There are other tales such as (but not the only story) Mothman about winged creatures being seen before disaster. We can only wait and see if more tales surface, though I rather hope they don’t if it portends something bad happening. - Still On the Track

Large Pterodactyl Seen Near Chicago

Large pterodactyl sighted 30 miles south of Chicago. Comment was posted on September 8, 2017 so the sighting would have occurred around the last week of August 2017:

“I can't believe I "happened" upon this video....my daughter saw something like this about 3 weeks ago in our back yard! We live 30 miles south of Chicago. As she pulled into the driveway her headlights caught a huge creature with large black wings fly across the driveway. She describes it as a "pteradactyl" I have no idea how to spell that, sorry. It really freaked her out. Something kinda eerie that goes along with the sighting is that our squirrel population has been seriously decreased. Maybe it ate them? IDK!"

Winged Man Flying Over Six Flags America Amusement Park

Maryland - “I have a sighting. Around 3 years ago my brother went to Six Flags America (Upper Marlboro, MD) for a physics field trip as his final year in high school and he said that he saw a huge winged man that was hairy and black. Thinking it was a batwing floaty he ignored it until it flew distantly away from the park. That's when he realized that that thing was real and it was huge. He managed to get a glimpse of his size and according to him it had a wingspan of around 10Ft but this was an estimate from afar so it's probably bigger. I'm sure other people saw it. Because ya know. it's Six Flags."

Pterosaur Observed West of Philadelphia

Hello, Mr. Strickler,

This is Tom from Philadelphia. We spoke on the phone earlier this evening and I gave you my account of the "Pterosaur" that I spotted flying over an area of Gladwyn, Pennsylvania. I enjoyed our conversation. You asked me to e-mail my account to you so here it is again:

I do landscaping work in the area of Gladwyn. The properties there are very large with lots of space between big houses. It is mostly a vast wooded area. My fellow worker and I had finished eating lunch on the front steps of the house and I went back down to the street (Country Club Lane) to put our leftovers into the car. I saw a strange dinosaur/birdlike creature flying above. At first it was silhouetted against the sky but I clearly saw a long skinny tail that ended in an outcropping. Silhouetted as it was, I described this outcropping, at the time, as a knob or bulbous shape at the end of the tail. The tail trailed behind the creature as it flew. It then was obscured by some trees but I continued to watch it's projected path. It was pretty much travelling in a straight line. It re-emerged on the other side of the trees and I again saw the long tail with the "knob" on the end. Then, at one point, it caught the light in such away that it was no longer silhouetted. The sun must have come out from some clouds. As it traveled away to my left I saw it's dorsal side. It was a somewhat tan or golden color, and, because it was such a uniform color, it appeared not necessarily to have feathers but possibly just skin or maybe very small scales. I told Stephen, my coworker, that I thought I saw a pterodactyl. At the time I didn't know the difference between a pterodactyl and other pterosaurs. I found out later that Pterodactyls don't have tails like what I saw. When I described the tail to Stephen, he said, "You mean something like a lion's tail." I realized that he described it very well with those words.

The next night I did a search on the computer for "birds that look like pterodactyls". I found out then that the pterodactyl doesn't have the long tail like the creature I saw. I found four flying reptile dinosaurs, or pterosaurs, all of which look surprisingly like what I saw. They are described as being in about the same size range, too. I would guess the wing span was about four feet but I can only guess at that since, when something is up in the sky, it's hard to reference it to other objects. The four pterosaurs that resemble the creature I saw are the rhamphorhinchus, eudimorphodon, scaphognathus and the dimorphodon. The last of these is only speculated to have the "knob" at the end of the tail although no fossils have actually been found with it. The other three are known to have the outcropping. The outcropping, in any of these, is actually a diamond shaped flap called a "vane".

I found that there have been many sightings of possible pterosaurs. Some people describe them as a large bat like creature (not everyone mentions a long tail - the actual pterodactyl, again, did not have a long tail). The pterosaurs that I named, and the one's that have been sighted by others, are bat like in that they don't have feathers and they have hands at the bend of the wing. They are NOT bat like in that they do not flap their wings quickly but have more of a gliding motion to their flight (like my creature). I have to be honest in saying that I did not see hands or fingers but there was so much for me to observe in a fairly short amount of time that I mostly noticed the tail. The shape of the head also escapes me now if I should have to describe it. My very first impression, the moment I spotted it, was not so much that it was a bat or bird but rather a birdlike dinosaur.

I feel so strongly about what I have seen that I sense that I should report it to somebody, somewhere. I am glad that I have been able to put this in writing while the incident is still fresh. I am happy to have this information shared with anyone. If someone has another explanation (other than that I saw a pterosaur) I will gladly listen. If there is a large bird in the Gladwyn area with a tail like that, etc., I will consider myself informed and not argue. So far, my research doesn't indicate that but I'm not a bird expert, etc.

Thanks, so much, for listening and for your encouragement. I wish you all the best with all that you are doing. Sincerely, TD

Flock of Golden Birds

Coventry, West Midlands, UK - 2006-09-06: I was ten years old, and every weekend I would visit my grandparents who lived just a couple of miles away. I can remember the atmosphere exactly. The sky was clear, the stars were brighter than usual, as was the moon. There was hardly a breeze, although it was coming up to ten past 11, which is sometimes unusual in the UK. My grandparents generously let us stay up way past normal bedtime hours. we'd listen to music, talk about current events and other things, but nothing out of the ordinary, so when this experience happened. I guess I wasn't taken seriously and ever since then, I've kept it quiet.

I was in the garden, and my grandparents had just gone inside to make hot chocolates and turn off the music. I always look at the sky and the stars, and I saw something I couldn't explain. I've done so much to see if anyone else has seen them or had a similar experience.

There were 8 birds the size of big doves flying across the sky, they were completely pure gold, and somehow almost glowing. They were flying gracefully, in perfect formation across the clear sky. I couldn't believe what i was seeing, because i tried to rationalise it somehow. i couldn't understand how they were glowing so bright as there was no source of light for them to reflect. i just watched them fly past in total amazement and wonder.

to this day i still haven't found any explanation or similar occurrence. - MUFON
