.WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A POW WOW !
Pow wows are social events. There're basically for White folks ( that includes the Mexican white man, the black white man, and others that are not of the first Nations people). It's hard for people who are not, in the traditional sense, referred to as White when your of the different Color. Many native people looked those who came with the white men, in this way... Because all these other people are not first nation people (native American if you like). Pow wows are a wonderful chance for traditional people (real red folks who follow the red way, and other native blood people who do not follow the traditional ways, necessarily), and part bloods (metis), and even white folks, to come and dance and show off their excellent skills. The people who probably get into it the most (to be literally in the dance)... Are probably the singers at the drum... The second group that we'll get into it (hopefully), the best are the dancers. Those dancers can be traditional, fancy, Grass dancers, Gouard dancers, and other styles as well). Hopefully, the people who were watching, we'll get caught up by the drum (it can do that), and they will get into the Full context of the history, of the singers, and the emotions, even if they do not speak the speech for understand what they're actually singing, the drum in the dancing conveys that. If you miss that need to head out for the Indian tacos get you some fried bread. That's probably all you're going to get out of this thing, if you miss the other. There are some airheads out there, that think if you're not brown, particularly dark brown, and or carry a card from the United States government says you're an Indian, then you're not. The Fact is many native peoples are not on the dawes Roll, Government role, and choose not to be. That is their choice. Amusingly, White people, always want to know how much Indian are you. Try asking that to a black person, a person of other cultral decent. ...(How much are you to be what you are)... Only three things are government regulated by blood: dogs, horses and Indians. The government doesn't seem to be interested how much Mexican American blood you are (and yes I have Mexican relatives so I can talk about if I want to). The government doesn't seem to care whether or not your African-American by percentage or not (yes I have African American relatives to, so I can talk about them as well). *(just trying to be politically correct here, smiles). And yes I've got Native American relatives as well ( though the white members of the family, Family don't seem to agree with that) hehehe. *(I often wonder how much "white blood they really have?" hehehehe This seems to be a favorite feature, that white folks love pick on (if you are "part blood). Like I said, pow wows, are primarily for white folks, put on by native people, to allow White people (regardless of color), to see them at their current best, and hopefully what may been, a glorious past. That's the hope anyway... Regardless of how much in the illusion that maybe to the beholder, or the participant. The best part of it is it's a lot of fun. Try the fried bread and Indian tacos. It's Great stuff...derrel sims.
