"What comes down to us in traditional Hinduism concerning Vishnu, Garuda and Sesha is filled with a pregnant crypticism which seems to point to the fact that Vishnu in Hindu mythological memory is the Sun-King Helios in Greek myth. Vishnu lives in the mythical continent Meru, the 'Axis of the World'. The name in Sanskrit means Spine, and I've taken it to refer to the Mountain-Spine that extends from pole to pole on the West coast of the Americas. Garuda is said to live in Hiranmaya, the Land-of-Gold, near a 'gold-producing river'. Which I would take to mean the Bolivian altiplano (the Land-of-Gold) and the Amazon. Sesha is aid to be king of a serpent-race of Nagas, and he reigns over the 'infernal-worlds', or Patala -- which I take to be the lowland river-basin world of Ecuador-Peru. And there are still unexcavated caves in Ecuador which we've already seen as the possible origin of the whole pre-emergence 'underworld' imagery which may have passed into Hindu myth as Patala."
