Why do people become furries? Isn't there something legally and morally wrong with that kind of attraction toward animals?

 

First of all, furries are not necessarily, or even commonly, zoophiles. Zoophilia is a sexual attraction to animals. A furry is not an animal. 

Secondly, there is nothing legally or morally wrong with any kind of attraction. Period. You can be attracted to anything and everything and there is nothing legally or morally wrong with it. Thoughts and attractions can’t be morally wrong and attempt to legislate thoughts and attractions fall flat every time. Even sexual attraction to children (pedophilia) is not legally or morally wrong.† Zoophilia is not legally or morally wrong either. 

Finally, the things that are morally and legally wrong are actions. If someone were to actually act on their attraction in a way that was not legal or moral, that is what would be wrong. Finding the difference between what is moral and what is not depends on who it harms. If everyone is a consenting adult and not one is being harmed, it is not morally wrong, no matter what. Pedophilia isn’t wrong, but having sexual relations with children is. It’s not the attraction that is wrong, it’s the action. Zoophilia isn’t wrong; having sexual relations with animals is. It’s not the attraction that is wrong; it’s the action. Dressing up in a furry costume and having sex isn’t wrong as long as everyone is a consenting adult. No moral problem there. 

Stop trying to judge people for their thoughts and attractions. Instead, judge whether something is morally wrong based on who it hurts. Can everyone involved consent (grooming sentient lifeforms is not consenting it is sex trafficking and slavery.)  Is anyone being harmed? 

People become furries because they enjoy it and it harms no one. There is nothing morally or legally wrong with it.

†Because people are often confused about this and I’ve been accused of being a “pedophile defender” before, I will clarify. I am not a pedophile and am absolutely against any type of sexual activity between adults and children, including underage teenagers. Any such activity is immoral and wrong. I’m a victim of childhood abuse myself and think that people who abuse children, sexually or otherwise, are absolutely among the worst of the worst. However, someone who has a sexual attraction to children that they cannot help (as far as we know, it is something that occurs in people without their choice) is suffering from an affliction. Their attraction is not wrong; it only becomes wrong if they act on it. I feel for them and want to do everything to help them so that they never, never act on it.
