Apparitions in the Central Pennsylvania Sky

Many of us are familiar with the Virgin Mary apparitions at Fatima in 1917. But less of us are familiar with the sightings of unexplained lights & anomalies in the sky of Columbia County in central Pennsylvania 3 years previous. The following report was posted in the Danville Morning News on July 31, 1914:
Villagers See Visions in Sky
A Mansion, Marching Children and Angel Appear Before Hetlerville Residents.
Residents of Hetlerville, a village in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, have been interested to a point bordering on superstitious fear by the stories told by well known and entirely responsible parties of peculiar sights which they have been seeing in the sky.
On Friday night last Harry Huddleson was going home from Nescopeck when his attention was attracted to the sky, and he was startled to see a picture vividly outlined in the heavens of an immense house filled with children dressed in white and each child having about its arm a black band. And while he looked the children came out of the house in columns of two dividing at the door with a column going in opposite directions. The sight was too plain for him to be mistaken and he was not dreaming, Mr. Huddleson declares, with emphasis. Greatly impressed by the sight he told the family but said little elsewhere until on the following Sunday, Mrs. Rush Lutz, a resident of that place, related a similar and equally remarkable experience.
Mrs. Lutz went into the yard at eleven o'clock Saturday night to take from the line the clothes she had washed that day when she also was attracted by the appearance of the sky. An immense house was shown vividly with an effect that she describes as wind waving through a rye field or as a picture would be on a screen if the canvas was being blown about. Mrs. Lutz is also equally positive. She wondered at the phenomena and hurried into the house. The sight remained for ten minutes or more.
The description Mrs. Lutz gives of the building she saw pictured in the sky and that of Mr. Huddleson are remarkably similar. Neither offered any solution and together with everyone to whom they told their experiences both were greatly mystified. That some sign was meant was the usual interpretation with thoughts at first of some terrible happening or disaster. Still another, Miss Pearl Pursel, declares that she saw in the heavens the form of an angel.
A possible solution is that it was a mirage. On the ocean and on a desert the reflection is frequently seen in the skies of objects far away. This is explained by the particular state of the atmosphere and the conflicting air currents that give a reflection. That it is a mirage that each of the Hetlerville residents saw is a possibility and unusual weather of this summer may give some substantiation. Whatever the phenomena there is no doubt of its being full and thrilling reality to the persons mentioned and generally by the residents of Hetlersville and section adjacent as the occurrences are being widely related with general wonder expressed.

Visions Continue Before People of Columbia County Villages
There is almost anything to be seen in the skies up in Columbia County these days if you look at the right time! Following the experiences of Hetlerville folks, as given in these columns the other day, Scottown residents declared they likewise saw strange sights and in large numbers during the latter part of last week they viewed the phenomena.
The sights they saw nearly duplicate those of Mrs. Rush Lutz, who went into details in discussing the phenomena, after her first experiences got into print. Said she:
"The light that I saw in the sky made it light enough in the yard for me to see to wring out clothes. It was from an object in the sky that appeared bright almost as the sun. I can't explain it and don't try to. Anyone who has a solution to explain it. The light was there. It was the strangest thing that I ever saw or expect to."
Mrs. Lutz spoke with an emphasis that showed her to have been profoundly moved by the strange experience. She continued. "I had some clothes to wring out. I lighted the lantern and lamp to go out to the well and when I was working the light appeared. It was light enough for me to work. As I looked across the fields I could see the wheat stubbles as plainly as in the day time and every object in the fields. I looked with awe at the heavens. It seemed to start at a point over Nescopeck Hill and swing across the heavens until it got to a point near the mountain and would go out, reappear and swing back. It did this three times across the skies. I ran into the house and upstairs and awakened my husband. It was a dark night. The sky was filled with stars but there was no moon. When the light disappeared it was perfectly dark. The light appeared to be like the front of a house. It was there a good many minutes. I was not fooled, was not dreaming and my eyes are not bad. I was thinking of nothing but my washing and would not have noticed the sky but for the fact that it grew so light about me that my lantern and lamp were not needed. I don't know what caused it or what it means, but it was there. God only knows."
Harry Huddleson, who saw the mansion in the sky and the smiling children, was driving to his home in Hetlerville from Willow Grove when he declares he saw the strange sight to which reference was previously made.
Going into more detail, Huddleson declares the sight he saw was that of a building outlined in a blaze of white. Then appeared two children, one entering and the other coming from the building. Both were dressed in white, although the bows in which their sashes were tied were different. Alongside the house were apparently thousands of children, each smiling. The faces of two became so distinct, he declared, that he would know them again. Fearing he would be ridiculed he only told his wife and not until the Lutz and Huddleson families met, when Mrs. Lutz related her experience, did he make known the sight he had seen.
Miss Pearl Pursel, aged 16, who lives beyond Nescopeck and who saw the form of an angel, was deeply affected by the sight. She took it as an omen and couldn't get it off her mind. When she saw the strange sight of the skies she told no one other than her mother, likewise fearing ridicule.
Peter Eddinger, of West Berwick, declares that in the daytime he saw outlined in the skies an exact reproduction of a flag of perfect bars of black, red and a tint that resembled a light bluish green. There was not a cloud in the sky at the time and upon going home looked in the encyclopedia to see if there was any nation that had a flag like it, but found none.
That there has been some phenomena in the skies seems likely, for Scottown citizens whose attention was directed to the flashes that resembled those seen by Mrs. Lutz declared there could be no mistake as to what they had seen with their own eyes.

It wasn't human. I could tell that right away. And right across the street is the Jefferson County Nature Center and there's a big stone gate and we, just about a hundred yards and there's a 60 mile per hour Chinook wind blowing. We get behind the gate and we're watching this and its got the dog by the tail and it's beating this dog on the head. It had the dog in its left hand and the stick in the right. Holding it out, you know. And my friend's name was Jody and I turned to him and I whispered. I forget what I whispered. I think I said, you know, can you believe this? Or whatever. This thing turned it head towards us and we're talking a hundred yards. Heavy wind. We were downwind from it. 6th Century Palace Unearthed at TintagelThe remains of an impressive sixth-century palace have been unearthed at Tintagel in Cornwall, England. Situated within the area in which the legendary King Arthur was reputed to have been born, the meter-thick walls of this ancient structure were revealed during recent excavations of the site by archaeologists from the Cornwall Archaeological Unit. More than 150 fragments of expensive pottery and fine glass were also found there - items that were most likely imported from exotic destinations by the palace's wealthy inhabitants. One of these - an item of Phocaean red-slip ware - came all the way from Turkey and would have been used to share food among guests during feasting. "This is the most significant archaeological project at Tintagel since the 1990s," said English Heritage properties curator Win Scutt. "The three-week dig is the first step in a five year research programme to answer some key questions about Tintagel and Cornwall’s past." "I have told this story to my parents (who were with me but didn't believe me) and others over the years, but finally gave up telling others.
When I was about 4, I was traveling with Mama & Daddy across Mississippi one night. This was back in the "Sputnik era" when we could still watch Sputnik and Telstar and other new satellites cross the sky at night (no light pollution). I was sleeping on the back seat of the car but woke up suddenly. I looked straight up (out the back car window) and saw a large, sparkly, twirly rotating thing not very high up, moving slowly through the sky, as if it were following the car. It was covered with colored lights on long spires - the spires moved slowly in and out while the whole thing rotated. It looked like a huge animated Christmas ornament. Being startled, and 4 years old, I let out a scream! Daddy nearly ran off the road; of course my parents were startled and stopped the car. They didn't see anything (the sparkly twirly thing disappeared) but said I must have seen a satellite.
About 17 years later I went to see Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind with friends. It was an enjoyable movie, right up until the Mothership rose up over the top of Devil's Tower. I burst out in tears and sobbed uncontrollably - I felt both tremendously sad and deliriously happy at the same time - a kind of "terrible ecstasy." I tried telling my friends "That's what I saw when I was 4!" but of course they thought I was nuts and had no idea what I was talking about.
Now, I know that Close Encounters was a fictional movie. And maybe I did see a satellite when I was 4. But the "click" in my brain when I first saw that scene in the movie was more like triggering of a long-hidden memory. (I still get that feeling when I watch the movie.) You probably get thousands of stories like this, but I feel better for having shared mine."

I am a 58 yr. old professional woman of color who has had visitations since I was a child. I know what happened to me and only want to discuss my events for research purposes. The first case listed happened at night around 1986/7. It is still a vivid memory of waking up on an examination table with several aliens of different heights around me under a bright light. At first I didn't feel afraid even know I knew I was not at home and believed I was on a spaceship. I thought I had been there several times before. They spoke to each other and myself through thought. The next thing I remember, I was still on/near the table but I felt very sad and was crying. I don't know why. When I woke up in the morning and went to work, I felt uneasy and nervous which, is not my nature. I was casually discussing the incident with a co-worker to further calm myself down when another employee who had come in started listening to what I was saying. Suddenly, she became very excited and said that she was there also and saw me on the exam table. It freaked us all out and we stopped talking about it. I was a deputy-director at this agency and I remember the name of the co-worker who also saw me.
Later Incident: Somehow, I believe this incident is connected to the first one described. I lived in Queens, NY and had several visitation memories from that location as an adult. The one I will discuss happened around 1993. I woke up in the morning and there was a stillness in the room that had me feel uneasy. I had two dogs at the time and neither one was in the room with me which was strange. I stepped off the bed and everything that had happened to me the night before came back in a rush and extremely detailed. I woke up to see very alien-like people entering my bedroom. I was not afraid at first because the first person who entered the room was my general Dr. I saw on regular basis. The second he appeared to come in, he stepped to the side and there were several aliens who also entered. I immediately became scared and the next thing I remember was being pushed up against the wall in my room and one of them was trying to exam/look for something through my private area. My Dr. seemed to be gone as I was calling out for him but the other aliens were on my left side and talking calmly and telepathically to each other. They were 4 or 5 of them in the room and by their voices, some were female. They all seemed to be some type of Dr/medical staff and wore white type clothes. The ones off to the side were about 6ft, very slender and almost angelic looking with minor interest in me. The one examining me was short, very rough, wearing a hood, about 4'5". I kept trying to see his face but he was trying to hide himself from me though he appeared the most non-human looking. There is more graphic detail to this but for the sake of space, in the end the alien found what he was looking for and removed it. I blacked out and then woke up as stated earlier. ********** Strange Encounter
I had an encounter with a UFO when I was 10 years old. It was in school and was playing football on the playground when I looked up and there was this craft. It looked just like the Lunar Module with windows going around the bottom of it. It was hovering in the air when a low black cloud came across and covered it. When the cloud had moved out of the way the craft was gone.
I told my mother that I had seen the Apollo coming back to earth because that is what it looked like. The Apollo mission was happening at the time, but I did not know about it until my Mother told me and explained that they come back to earth in the Pacific Ocean. It took a few years for me to realize what I had seen and that`s when I said to myself it was not of this earth.
When I was 14 years old I was with a group of mates and we were playing in the nearby woods next to a golf course. We went onto the the course and sat on one of the tee-off bunkers. It was starting to get dark so we decided to head back home when one of the boys says, "what`s that up there"? When we looked up, there were three lights, blue, red and green in a triangle shape and it was not moving. We were too scared to move and we just sat there looking at it. It seemed like an age, when one the lads says it`s lights were dimming. The lights were not dimming they were getting smaller. I realized it was rising and as soon as it was out of sight we legged it and run towards the local school because it was lit up. We would not go back into the woods.
When I got home I told my parents what had happened, but they sort of ignored me. In the local paper the next evening the headlines was, "Policeman Spots Triangular UFO in the Breacon Beacons" (about 30 miles as the crows flies from us) on the same night as us. That`s when my mother believed my story .
A couple of weeks later I was walking with my mate going to do our paper round and as we were walking to the local shops a green ring with a green ball in the center of it flew over the top of us. It looked as if it was going to hit a block of flats in the distance, but it went over the horizon. It was that big it looked as if it was low and it was overcast as well, so it had to be under the clouds. All of this happened in Newport Gwent, South Wales and the encounters that I had happened in an area of about 2 miles around my house. I am 50 years old now and I remember all of it as if it were yesterday. I will never forget and I know what I saw. - Name Withheld

One evening in the Spring of 1975, my girlfriend and I were driving through the Kansas countryside. After crossing a cement bridge that spanned a river, we pulled into a farmer's access road and parked at the edge of a field alongside a bend in the river with the car pointing east. Not long after we stopped we noticed a strange light that suddenly approached our location in a quick "blur". Suddenly, hovering above the tress was a dark object, rectangular in shape with on red & one green running light positioned together on the lower part of the craft at its center. We stared in amazement and couldn't take our eyes off the object.
After 5 minutes or so, we noticed the craft's position had moved to the right. It seemed to move in a very slow motion to the other side of the river. After another 5 minutes I decided to drive away from the area. As we turned onto the county road and subsequently onto the cement bridge we saw that the craft had returned to its original position, above us and slightly back from the bridge. I stopped again and got out to look at the craft.
The object was about 20-25 ft. wide and now I noticed a large rectangular glass window, or what appeared to be glass, running across the middle third of its front. Standing inside to the left side looking down on us were two beings, which I could see only from the waist up but could tell that theses beings were about 4 ft tall, with abnormally large heads and large black eyes. The eyes seemed devoid of emotion and their skin was pure white, like the moon, the texture resembling that of an albino salamander. Their eyes ran almost north/south with their heads. The craft hovered silently the whole time. After about a minute of eye contact with the humanoids I got back into the care and rapidly drove away from the area. We could still see the craft hovering where we had left it.
My girlfriend and I eventually married and still live very near to the location where we witnessed this craft. Sometimes, we both get an urge to return to the spot and just sit there and talk about our shared experience, kind of hoping these beings would stop by. - JJ
