Background

Of what we know for certain, the Stargates are large structures with the majority being subterranean. They are massively complicated devices of no known human technology, which are powered by a contained Singularity1. These Singularities generate the power that creates the Wormhole2 and may also be instrumental in other aspects of Wormhole creation. The Stargates have predictable periods of activation, to predicted locations. The Wormholes which are created are "oneway" in so much that an Outgoing Gate from a gate
will not allow matter to travel from the location where the distal point of the Wormhole forms. Similarly there are Incoming Gates that do not allow travel to the originating location. There seems to be no pattern between Incoming and Outgoing Gates. Duration between Wormhole formations varies greatly. As of yet there is no understanding of why the "free" end of the Wormhole (the end not "tethered" by the originating Stargate) has a semi random touchdown point.
The last attempt to dismantle a Stargate resulted in a massive implosion when the Singularity escaped containment. This has resulted in a lack of technical information on how the Stargate works. Therefore all data in this document is based solely on observation of what we consider "normal" Stargate operations.

History

I will now examine exactly what we know about the operation of the Stargates and their attendant Wormholes.

The Stargate mechanisms (of which there were originally 78) were found under the ice or Antarctica in the early forties. Some were removed and sent to various countries around the globe. As of yet the Gates which were left in Antarctica have been unrecoverable under the permanent ice after the destruction of the Antarctic base. One wonders what effect global warming might have on the discovery of new Stargates.

Stargate composition

Physically the Stargates are limited in size. This obviously has an effect on the amount of matter that can be transferred through the Wormhole at any given time. Indeed the first colonies set up off-world were assembled piecemeal over the past few decades. This means that the loss of any off world base is a loss of massive amounts of time, money and manpower. It takes roughly five trips to transfer the pieces of machinery the size of a jeep, although this is due to other considerations that are mentioned below3. There appears to be no control structures around the gate itself.

At present we have no knowledge of the actual composition of the Stargate. It appears to be constructed of an unknown metal. No samples have been made available due to the risk of Singularity containment failure, which would be catastrophic for the gate itself and for the local environment. Ultrasound and other scans have shown no internal structures, although it is unknown whether this is due to the structure being solid, or that the construction of the Stargate is opaque to ultrasound, X-ray and radar imaging. As mentioned above the power for the creation of the Wormholes is generated via the containment of a Singularity within the Stargate itself. We are only aware of this due to the surviving archive information from the previous disastrous attempt to dismantle a Stargate.

We do not know how this Singularity is generated, nor contained from affecting the Stargate or its immediate environs. Obviously the containment of a Singularity shows that the Stargate creators have/had/will have technology that is vastly more advanced than our current technology.

Due to the lack of any form of control structure we have no way of initiating a Wormhole, and indeed this may be physically impossible. The supercomputers back at SGCUNI have sensors that detect the minor fluctuations in the local gravity/electromagnetic fields4, and this allows the prediction of Incoming and Outgoing Wormholes. These appear to be cyclical and the prediction systems run from data that survived the destruction of the Antarctic base. I have heard rumours that these programs and datasets will soon be obsolete, leading to an inability to predict Stargate activity. If this is true, then every effort must be made in order to gain information that will enable us to remain able to predict Wormhole formation.

Wormhole

Outgoing Wormhole formation begins with a short burst of low power radio waves; these rapidly increase in frequency until the energy output crosses into microwave frequencies. The energy output remains stable as the energy form shifts into heat and then into the characteristic glow of visible light that lasts approximately half a second. The energy then continues into the ultraviolet and then onwards towards a burst of low powered X-rays. This X-ray burst is roughly equivalent to the radiation receives by a medical chest X-ray5. There is then another burst of Gamma radiation at which point the Wormhole forms. An Incoming Wormhole forms in much the same way, except that the energy output is reversed, i.e. Gamma radiation, X-rays, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave and finally radio waves. At all times the radiation output by the Wormhole is well below the tolerances of the human body. This may point to the creators of the Stargates having similar physiological tolerances to our own.

Once the Wormhole is formed it connects to a distant location, the common belief is that it connects to another planet although I will later show why I do not believe this to be the case. The Wormhole can be likened to a long tunnel dug vertically, in that the entry side is the "top" of the tunnel, and the exit point is the bottom of the tunnel. Organic items entering fully into the entry side of the Wormhole "fall" towards the "bottom" or exit point of the Wormhole. Reverse travel is therefore not possible at present. It may be possible to change this in the future by inputting energy into the Wormhole after it has formed, at present this is not possible with our technology although there are anecdotal accounts of organisms travelling through an inbound Wormhole. Another way to climb "up" the Wormhole might be to adjust the vibration frequencies of the Wormhole energies. I leave this for further experimentation.

Properties of the Wormhole

There have been a number of occasions where transports of non-living materials were attempted. All of these experiments ended with failure. Current theories tend towards the presence of both water and electricity being needed to send an item through a Wormhole. Coincidently these elements are found in all living beings. I theorise that it is instead the living "aura", such as that revealed by Kirillian photography which restricts Wormhole travel to living or recently dead beings. Although this is of great defensive importance, for example
weapons fire cannot travel through a Wormhole, it also greatly limits the transfer of equipment or resources off-world. Therefore all colonies should be completely self-sufficient. I would theorise that the living "aura" put out by a human subject extends approximately 40 cm around their body. This would explain why clothing and other light equipment can be safely transferred through the Wormhole. Further experiments will need to be undertaken, as will the idea of where items, which do not reach their destination, end up.

The "Many Worlds" theory

As mentioned previously I believe that the Stargates lead not to another planet, but instead to another dimension. There are a number of reasons why I believe this to be the case. Firstly, all of the locations visited are largely Earth based. They have similar biology, equivalent gravity and a yellow Sun that looks very familiar. Although the Extraterrestrial theory would suggest that the builders of the Stargates were human-like and therefore would construct gates on similar planets, this does not explain why the locations visited are virtually identical.

The energy required to open a Wormhole to another dimension are much smaller than that needed to cause a fold in Space-Time. Thereby Occams razor would suggest a shifting of vibrational frequencies which would allow travel to an alternate dimension. The "oneway" properties of the Wormhole suggest that some form of translation is taking place. This would support a "Many Worlds" theory6 where the travelling object needs to be readjusted to its new vibrational frequency. Finally, if the Specimen that was recovered is of an alternate dimension/dimension travelling background, then this would explain the traditional stories where such creatures seemingly ignore the laws of physics.

The "Stargazer" experiment is designed to test such hypothesis, it is a great shame that the data from the first experiment appears to have been lost to hostile forces. Perhaps the experiment will get a second chance, as it is of utmost importance concerning the utility and technology surrounding the Stargate program.

Communication

Communication through a Wormhole is a matter of great desire, recent missions have shown that up to date information would be of great value to the troops on the ground. As the Wormhole leads to either a place many light years away, or to another dimension altogether, a minimum of super-luminal communication will need to be investigated. I propose that a container of entangled particles would fit the mission requirements of such a device. However if my theory of inter-dimensional travel is correct then I cannot predict how the entangled particles would react. For those not fluent in the concept of entangled particles, suffice to say they allow instantaneous communication of information between any two parts of the Universe. What would be required is some form of encoding the information that is transferred in order to allow communication between RGHQ 5.1 and the team off-world.

Summary

I shall attempt to draw up some form of basic blueprint as soon as time allows. I hope that I have shown that the Wormhole phenomenon is one which has both a great potential for advancing humanities knowledge of itself and its place in the Universe. But in addition it has a great mystery about which only further detailed and properly funded research will be able to dispel.

SINGULARITY

clip_image003A singularity is a region of space-time in which gravitational forces are so strong that even general relativity, the well-proven gravitational theory of Einstein, and the best theory we have for describing the structure of the universe, breaks down there. A singularity marks a point where the curvature of space-time is infinite, or, in other words, it possesses zero volume and infinite density. General relativity demands that singularities arise under two circumstances. First, a singularity must form during the creation of a black hole. When a very massive star reaches the end of its life, its core, which was previously held up by the pressure of the nuclear fusion that was taking place, collapses and all the matter in the core gets crushed out of existence at the singularity. Second, general relativity shows that under certain reasonable assumptions, an expanding universe like ours must have begun as a singularity. We are not aware of how the singularities in the Stargates came into being.

WORMHOLE

clip_image004

A Wormhole is a "tunnel" which leads from one place in the Universe to another distant place. A beam of light travelling through normal space takes longer than one using the "shortcut" of a Wormhole. Schwarzenchild formulae give evidence against the forming of natural Wormholes. However within a Singularity, General Relativity breaks down and therefore a Wormhole becomes possible.

1. Singularities are points where the bend of Space-Time becomes near infinite thereby causing infinite gravity. It has been theorised that these may give rise to "natural" Wormholes. The Singularities contained within the Stargate mechanism are instead used primarily for power generation. Singularities may occur naturally within Black Holes. See Appendix

2. A Wormhole is essentially a tear within Space-Time that allows travel to distant places without needing to travel the intervening distance. For a graphic aid to this see Appendix of this document.

3. The so-called "Biological effect", which prevents non-organic matter from passing through a Wormhole without an equal amount of organic matter. Further discussion of this follows in the main text.

4. There are a number of sensors surrounding the Stargate, these feed the data that they gather from minute fluctuations in the local area surrounding the Stargate into the WAN supercomputers. These supercomputers then analyse this information with the look-up tables that escaped the Antarctic base in order to predict Wormhole formation. If the Antarctic data is indeed about to expire then safe travel will no longer be possible.

5. Equivalent to three days of natural background radiation. Travelling in a transatlantic aircraft results in higher radiation exposure.

6. The "Many Worlds" theory was imagined by Rosen-Wheeler in the late 1940's. It states that there are many "alternate" Universe' and that these Universe' are created by change from the "original" Universe. This is a theory which was quickly adopted by science fiction writers to great effect. E.g. the "Sliders" television programme.

Introduction

This document's purpose is to outline some of the issues surrounding the gates and identify core questions for future research. As such this document raises issues that the United Nations Space Defence Command (UNSGC) are still searching for answers to. The answers to these questions will allow the formulation of effective strategies and protocols for the use of Contact Teams. These teams need to operate efficiently given the limited off-world time available to them.

The Byrd expeditions went to first the Arctic and then later on the Antarctic regions in the early part of the 20th Century. It was during the exploration of the South Pole that the gate complex was discovered. During the surveys that followed, a total of 78 gate mechanisms were discovered buried approximately 5000 feet (1500 metres) under the Antarctic ice. They were located in a circular chamber and were numbered by the UNSGC from one to 78. The gates came in a variety of shapes and proportions.

Gate operations started in the early forties and ran through to 1995. There were no reported major incidents from any of the known, on or off world, sites during this period. It was assumed that an unknown, perhaps alien, civilisation had conceived and constructed the technology, but that this civilisation had long since disappeared, possibly millions of years ago.

A decision was made UNSGC to try moving some of the gates to more accessible locations, since their location in the Antarctic added considerably to the logistical costs of operating them. Gate 50 was destroyed during this process, however a team from the UK was able to remove number 51. After this successful operation, the United States got gate 52, Russia number 53, France number 54 and China number 55. After the destruction of the Antarctic base the remaining gates became inaccessible. The remaining 72 gates may be recoverable in the future, if the base becomes more accessible through the effects of global warming.

An undetermined number of gate mechanisms have also been detected on the seabed under the Arctic Ocean at the North Pole. For a fuller report on the history of the Contact programme, please see the archive files on the subject.

The Gate Enigma

So far, no mission to any other world has found such a large number at any one site as that found on Earth. A few planets have been discovered to have more than one though. This of course does not mean that there are no other worlds with this number, or greater, on them. It's just that we are not currently aware of the existence of such a world. This leaves us with the question of why were the 78 gates placed in Antarctica?

The number itself does not appear to be significant in itself. For instance, it's not a prime number. Again, speculation has to be cautious, because there may have been more gates in the past. These may have been lost or destroyed over time by the formation of the ice sheets that now exist in the Antarctic region. However, it might be useful if the historical records in UNSGC possessions were reassessed. This may also shed further light upon the discovery of the gates back in the 1940s.

No one has a definite idea why 78 gate mechanisms were located in the same area of the Antarctic, but some questions can be formulated around the existence of the find and location. What we are left with is a series of unanswered questions.

Was the Earth a transit hub?

The gates here on Earth appear to be in two big clusters, but when multiple gates have been found on other planets, they do not appear to follow the pattern of the one's found on Earth. So far the Earth is the only planet so far known to have such a large number of gates in one location. This might be due to the space time location of our planet, which means that planets that can have more than one or two gates are rare. We need to catalogue worlds with more than one gate. Perhaps though, every world has multiple gates, but we've just not found them?

Then there is the problem of calculating when a gate will be open. Followed by the knowledge that it won't open again for X amount of time after it's closed. Perhaps the Earth has a large number of gates at one location, because it's the ideal solution to maintaining links across a network? The large number of gates means that one or more is bound to be active at any one time. This would make the linking, otherwise inaccessible worlds, through alternate possible routes.

In this scenario, the Earth becomes a transit hub for a chain of gates. However, is this hub like a railway or an airport terminal? In the former case all routes terminate here, but gates on other planets are only accessible to a specific gate or group of gates. In the latter, each gate can be linked to all the others and the extra numbers are due to the need to be able to fulfil the demands of traffic density.

To know which metaphor is correct, we would need to know if each gate links to one (or a limited number of other gates), or whether each one links to lots of gates. A timetable of the gates on Earth activation times, compared to a timetable of all the known gates on other worlds, would allow us more insight into this problem. There is some suggestion that the Nakamura Corporation already have such a timetable, or part of one, because of reports that their couriers do multiple sequential jumps to reach locations.

How old are the gates?

We now know that the ice started to form around 15 million years in Antarctica, since we know that they were found 1500 metres below the surface of the ice. However, the gates on the seafloor under the Arctic icecap could conceivably be considerably younger or older.

If we assume, that the average depth of the ice in the Arctic is seven metres, any sufficiently heavy object placed on the ice would heat up and melt the ice under it. We can make a rough estimate using the rate of one millimetre, per ten metric tonnes, per square metre, per 100 hours. However, how much the base weighs per square metre will have to be based on a best guess basis.

If the base exerted a pressure of 10 metric tonnes per square metre it would take approximately 76 years for it top sink through the ice. However, the ice pack at the North Pole is constantly on the move and has been recorded as moving up to two kilometres per day. The chance of a base remaining in a stable condition on the ice pack is therefore minimal.

One conclusion is that the Arctic gate base was built on the seabed before it became covered by the ocean, due to the Earthquakes causing the land to sink. From this we can get an upper limit to the age of these gates and this turns out to be around 160 million years old. This was the first time that there would have been landmasses above the water at the North Pole.

If it were possible to get a magnetic reading from the rocks that both the gates complexes are built on, then we can count the magnetic ridgelines to the nearest active volcanic vents, which are mid-ocean. Then multiply them by 76,000 years and get a reasonably accurate date on the placement of the gates on Earth. This would enable us to tighten up our estimate of them being anything between 15 and 160 million years old.

Were the gates made by our ancestors?

The large numbers of gates found on Earth compared to other planets seems to imply the Earth was very important to the gate makers. It is possible, though unlikely, given our current knowledge of Earth's prehistory, that the gates were created by an intelligent species resident on the Earth in an earlier epoch.
