ｳThough I have been mystified by the UFO phenomenon for 30   ｳ

ｳyears, I'm at least bemused by the attitudes of many who    ｳ

ｳhaunt its meeting places, special events, lecture halls,    ｳ

ｳmagazines and...newsletters.                                ｳ

ｳ                                                            ｳ

ｳWith the certitude and messianic fervor of the chosen, they ｳ

ｳexpound their cherished beliefs: "I know there's an         ｳ

ｳinternational conspiracy to keep us from the truth!" says   ｳ

ｳone.  "The revelations being channelled from the Arcturians ｳ

ｳare really illuminating!" gushes another.  "We have star    ｳ

ｳchildren!" writes a lady who claims communion with          ｳ

ｳVenusians.  "...A powerful force from outside mankind       ｳ

ｳis...driving us...into the abyss!" exclaims a European      ｳ

ｳufologist who insists the "evidence" is mounting.  At least ｳ

ｳ"3.7 million" men, women and children have been abducted by ｳ

ｳUFOs, concludes a recent Roper Poll - according to some.    ｳ

ｳWhat? UFOs?  Shucks, friend, they're just a lot of "ionized ｳ

ｳair," states a plasma vortex theorist, as if summarizing a  ｳ

ｳstranger-than-fiction phenomenon that's been making fools ofｳ

ｳfolks for over 45 years.                                    ｳ

ｳ                                                            ｳ

ｳAnd, meanwhile, in the midst of all the self-indulgence and ｳ

ｳegospeak, the ubiquitous Phil Klass, who apparently sees    ｳ

ｳhimself as a minister to the misguided, and is seen by      ｳ

ｳothers as the Prime Minister of Misinformation and          ｳ

ｳMisinterpretation, declaims, with equal acumen and          ｳ

ｳassurance, that UFOs are all a lot of beguiling baloney and ｳ

ｳthat the very idea our government is hiding information     ｳ

ｳabout UFOs is...unpatriotic.  Whatever happened to the UFO  ｳ

ｳmystery?  Has it finally been solved by the disinformation  ｳ

ｳlobby and the same species of simpleton who, a few decades  ｳ

ｳago, would have called it "marsh gas?"                      ｳ

ｳ                                                            ｳ

ｳHas it been levitated out of consensus reality by those who ｳ

ｳchannel 2,000-year-old entities, party with star people,    ｳ

ｳhave transcendental visions and access to revealed truths?  ｳ

ｳOr has it become the tool and teething ring of "New Age"    ｳ

ｳmessiahs and missionaries, cultists and confabulators,      ｳ

ｳhustlers and hoaxers in pursuit of emotional, psychological,ｳ

ｳeconomic, and other misbegotten agendas?                    ｳ

ｳ                                                            ｳ

ｳThere is, still, regardless of what anyone tells you, a UFO ｳ

ｳmystery.  Maybe they're extraterrestrial.  Maybe not.  Thereｳ

ｳis, still, an abduction mystery.  Maybe the abductors are   ｳ

ｳengaging in what Flying Saucer Review calls a "broad plan ofｳ

ｳgeneric tinkering."  Maybe not.  Maybe crop circles are the ｳ

ｳwork of fairies, or a sign of imminent earth changes, or    ｳ

ｳclever hoaxes, or unidentified natural phenomena, or a      ｳ

ｳcombination thereof.  And maybe not.  Why must we have a    ｳ

ｳfixed and fatuous notions regarding such phenomena?         ｳ

ｳ                                                            ｳ

ｳSomeone once claimed that just saying "I don't know," when  ｳ

ｳwe most assuredly do not, "know", is the beginning of       ｳ

ｳwisdom.                                                     ｳ

ｳ                                                            ｳ

David Jacobs      I would estimate that %99.99 of all abductees are unaware of what has happened to them. Perhaps many of them know that they have had strange, out of the ordinary experiences like missing time events, Out of Body Experiences, "astral travel," seen ghosts, or even had deceased relatives visit them at the foot of their beds, but these experiences are chalked up to "normality" oftentimes.      They have an available menu of culturally determined explanations of strange occurrences and they pick and chose among them to help explain what has happened to them.
