Hubble: Giant galaxies die from the inside out [heic1508]; Rosetta blog updates
MISSION NEWS AS OF FRIDAY 17 APRIL 2015
+ GIANT GALAXIES DIE FROM THE INSIDE OUT [HEIC1508]
Astronomers have shown for the first time how star
formation in 'dead' galaxies sputtered out billions of years ago. The NASA/ESA
Hubble Space Telescope and ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) have revealed that
three billion years after the Big Bang, these galaxies still made stars on
their outskirts, but no longer in their interiors. The results will be
published in the 17 April 2015 issue of the journal Science.

ROSETTA BLOG UPDATES
+ COMETWATCH 15 APRIL
Today's CometWatch entry is a single frame NAVCAM image
obtained on 15 April, from a distance of 170 km from the centre of Comet
67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
+ COSIMA: MEET THE FAMILY
Rosetta's dust analysing instrument COSIMA (COmetary
Secondary Ion Mass Analyser) has been very busy collecting dust - 12,000 grains
and counting! The COSIMA team shared this image of some of their named dust
grains at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Vienna this week.
+ ROSETTA GROUND BASED CAMPAIGN: COMET 67P/C-G RECOVERED
ON 13 APRIL
Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is back! In fact, the
comet has been in sight for Rosetta for many months, but since the end of last
year it was not possible to observe it with telescopes on Earth because it was
in solar conjunction.
+ COMETWATCH 12 APRIL
Today's CometWatch entry was taken by Rosetta's
Navigation camera on 12 April from a distance of 146.8 km from the centre of
Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.
